Some more about connections: the window panel on the left, with connections and their numbers, shows which Connection you're customizing at any given time. It is also the order in which they appear in menus. For now, Connection 1 should be highlighted.

Now, set your nickname and alternate nickname. The first is the name you'll go by on IRC. The second is what you'll go by if someone's using the first (And don't use the ones in this example shot, since they're mine).

Your User Name should probably be set to whatever the username from your email address is. People can see this when you join a channel, in a /whois, and possibily their userlist. The Real Name field can either be set to your real life name, some fake name, or nothing at all. It's only seen in a /whois.

Now you should enter the name and port of the IRC server you want to connect to in the germane fields. If you don't know them, click the Serverlist button. It will bring up a window to let you choose from many different networks and their servers. Hit the Done button, and then choose Save Preferences from the File menu. That's it! ShadowIRC is now configured to allow you to go on IRC! Simply choose Connect from the File menu, and choose the connection name you set from the sub-menu that pops up, or do the same from the little arrow-shaped widget at the bottom of the Console window.
